Mumbai:
A 22-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly throwing acid on his married colleague's face after she spurned his advances, police said.
The accused, Deepak Gaikwad was apprehended from Kalyan, on the outskirts of Mumbai, today, police said, adding, he was produced before a local court which remanded him in police custody till December 24.
Gaikwad threw acid on Rani Shaikh (22) last night when she was returning from her company office at Shandi industrial estate in Mulund.
The accused also works in the same office, police said, adding, she was in an auto rickshaw when the incident occurred.
Shaikh's condition is critical and she is in ICU at the Sion hospital, they said.
Gaikwad took the extreme step after the woman repeatedly rejected his advances on the grounds that she did not like him and she was married. The accused had also asked her to break her marriage and get married to him, police said.
Yesterday, as Shaikh's auto rickshaw stopped at a signal, Gaikwad approached her and threw acid from a bottle on her face.
The accused followed Rani Shaikh to her residence in Kalwa. The scared Rani informed her in-laws, who beat up Gaikwad, police said, adding, further probe was on.
