Man burnt alive by neighbours over property dispute

Mumbai: A 36-year-old man was burnt alive allegedly by his three neighbours over a property dispute in suburban Versova, police said today.

The accused Savio Anthony, Sayo Anthony and Sanjay Parab poured kerosene on the victim Rehmat Shah before setting him on fire at Sundarwadi area in Seven Bungalows area last night, they said.

Shah, a driver by profession, is survived by his mother, second wife and an eight-year-old son from his first wife, police said.

As per the complaint lodged by Shah's sister Noorbano Shaikh, who stays next door, the victim had a tiff with the trio over his house. The accused wanted him to sell his house for personal gains but the victim refused to do so, they said.

Shaikh claimed that Shah had come to her house to wish her on the occasion of Eid festival and then left to visit the other relatives.

According to police, on his way out one of the three men provoked Shah who  reacted angrily but his sister intervened and prevented him from getting into a fight last night.

After a few hours, one of the three accused allegedly poured kerosene on Shah and set him ablaze, police said, adding that Shah was rushed to nearby Cooper hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A manhunt has been launched to trace the absconding accused who are said to have criminal background, police added.
