Man detained for stealing dies in police custody in Mumbai

Mumbai: A man, detained by cops for allegedly stealing, died in the custody of Vanarai police station in suburban Mumbai.

22-year-old Manoj Salve and his aide Prakash Chavan were detained by the police after the security guards at the NESCO Exhibition ground allegedly caught them red handed, police said.

The guards allegedly beat up the two accused before handing them over to the police.

According to police, Salve complained of uneasiness when he was detained. When the police took him to a nearby government hospital, the doctors declared him dead.

Police said autopsy will reveal the exact cause of Salve's death. "If it is found that Salve died because of the injuries caused due to assault by security guards, then they will be booked," said a police officer.
