Mumbai:
A one-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped by an unidentified man from outside Borivali railway station. Later the girl and the kidnapper were found dead after they were hit by a speeding train, police said today.
According to police, victim Sandhya Chavan was kidnapped from outside Borivali railway station by the accused aged about 25 to 30 years at about 9.30 pm last night.
Sandhya's mother Rekha sells fruits outside the station.
She had gone to the station to fetch water, leaving her daughter behind with the basket of fruits, said S Kadam, inspector at Kasturba Marg police station.
"When she returned, she could not find her daughter, following which she carried out frantic search all over but in vain. After she complained, we began a probe," the officer said.
"As we continued the investigation, we learnt that a man had picked her up with an intention to abduct her," Mr Kadam said.
Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified man was found on the tracks at about 11 pm last night between Kandivali and Borivali railway stations, as he was hit by a speeding train, police said, adding that he was found to be the same person who abducted the girl.
"This morning the girl's body was found in the bushes, 15 to 20 feet away from the place where the man's body was found," Kadam said.
"It seems that the man might have been hit by a train while escaping with the girl, who was flung in the air and fell in the bushes. Both the victim and the accused had injuries caused by the train accident," Mr Kadam added.
Nothing has been found yet that would help the police to get the identity of the accused, he said.
