Mumbai:
A butcher was allegedly stabbed to death in his south Mumbai shop by a youngster on Thursday, who later tried to commit suicide to evade arrest, police said.
According to them, Jamal Qureshi (45) and Shaukat Ali Niyan (24) were seen arguing in Haji Kasam building's ground floor shop at Sulti Mohalla, and after a while, the former was found on the floor with grievous injuries on the neck and abdomen.
"Hearing the commotion, a person called Imran peeped into the shop and found Jameel lying on the ground with severe injuries and furious Shaukat standing. He immediately closed the room and alerted the cops," Assistant Police Commissioner Ravi Thakur told reporters.
When the cops reached the spot, Shaukat was also found with grievous injuries on his abdomen, Thakur said.
"The injuries on the accused appeared to have been self inflicted. In a bid to evade arrest, he appeared to have injured himself," Thakur said, adding that the chopper used in the crime has been recovered. Police added, the reason for the heated argument between the two was not yet clear.
"Shaukat is undergoing treatment. He can only tell us as to what had happened that prompted him to kill Jameel," Thakur said.
Locals claimed that Shaukat used to buy mutton from Jameel and then sell it at various eateries in the city, police said, adding that the claims are being verified.
