A surveillance footage has been recovered that shows Sachin Waze - the Mumbai police officer suspended amid multi-agency probe linked to Mukesh Ambani security scare - taking a train from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on March 4 to Thane where businessman Mansukh Hiran was found dead a day later, investigators have said.
Another CCTV footage shows him going from Mumbai Police Headquarters to the train station the same night. The investigators have said Mr Waze, 49, left his cell phone at the headquarters that night so that his location could not be traced.
Mansukh Hiran's SUV - laden with explosives - was found abandoned outside the Mumbai home of India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, on February 25. On March 5, he was found dead in Thane's Mumbra creek. When the car was traced back to him, it was found he had reported the SUV as stolen on February 17.
Mansukh Hiran's wife had alleged Mr Waze's involvement in his death, which added another dimension to the probe. Mr Waze had also allegedly borrowed the SUV for four months till he returned it on February 5.
Last night, a team of officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took Mr Waze to the train station and showed him the CCTV footages to recreate the sequence of events.
Mr Waze was also taken to the Mumbra creek in Thane where Mansukh Hiran's body was found.
The probe agency is trying to connect the dots amid a deepening investigation. Reports said the investigators spent over an hour at both the locations.
Last week, another surveillance footage had surfaced that showed Mr Waze driving a colleague accused in the Mansukh Hiran murder on March 2 in an Audi car that was seen passing through the toll gates at the Bandra Worli Sea Link.
Two men - constable Vinayak Shinde, 55, and bookie Naresh Dhare, 31, - were arrested last month in the murder probe by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad on the same day the case was transferred to the NIA.
The Audi sedan is among at least six cars - including a Mitsubishi Outlander and two Mercedes Benz - that have been seized by the NIA so far.
