Mumbai: 11 hurt as gas leakage leads to major blaze

Mumbai: Eleven people, including a 11-month-old, were injured in a cooking gas leak and fire incident in Thane on Tuesday morning. The condition of three of the injured is stated to be serious as they have been inflicted with more than 70% burn injury.

The incident took place at about 7 am at Anna Madrasi Chawl near Siddheshwar Lake at Paachpakhadi in the city. Fire broke out in resident, Manohar Pangare's room when his wife, Manali, 30, tried to light the gas burner to make tea. According to fire officials, gas had already leaked in her room as it is suspected she might have forgotten to switch off the burner. Spark from the lighter instantly caused fire. Manohar and Manali received nearly 25% burn injuries.

Meanwhile, gas had also spread into neighbouring room through the Mangalore-tiled roof where Ashok Yermule lives with his family. Before they could know what was happening, their room also caught fire. Ashok received 68%, his wife, Varsha received 42%, 4-year-old daughter, Sakshi , 11-month-old daughter, Samruddhi 70% and Ashok's father Bhagwat sustained 68% burn injuries. All of them were admitted to the civil hospital. Ashok, Bhagwat and the two daughters are in a critical condition.

Two other neighbours, Arun Patil and Gulab Bhosale also sustained burns when the fire spread out of the rooms. Two persons, Anil Kelkar and Ashish Patil, who tried to save the people, were also slightly injured. It took nearly an hour for the fire personnel to put out the fire. Till then, however, Pangare's entire room was burnt to ashes. Naupada police have registered a case of accident and are investigating further.
