Mumbai:
A Mumbai court has rejected the bail plea of Janhavi Gadkar, the Mumbai lawyer who rammed her Audi car into a taxi while driving on the wrong side of the Eastern Freeway, allegedly in a drunken state.
This was her second bail application that was rejected by the Kurla metropolitan magistrate's court. Her first plea was turned down on June 10.
Ms Gadkar, a corporate lawyer, was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, for the June 9 accident. Two people traveling in the taxi, including the driver, had been killed in the crash.
Ms Gadkar had reportedly driven for about 10 km on the wrong side of the freeway before the crash.
Her lawyer had said in the bail application the investigation in the case was over and hence she could be granted the relief.
Ms Gadkar also said that the police have got various documents like blood report, RTO report, while all the injured victims have been discharged from the hospital.
She also told the court, through her lawyer Mahesh Sabnis, that she will cooperate with the police in the case.
However, the police opposed her bail application saying that the case is triable by the sessions court and, hence the magistrate's court cannot grant her bail.
The police also contended that her bail was rejected at the previous instance by the same court on the ground that the offence was serious and the investigation was underway.
