Mumbai:
Mumbai's top cop and prominent members of India's film fraternity met on Monday to discuss how Bollywood and the police could collaborate to make Mumbai a safer city.
"We discussed how to make Mumbai a safer place and we all know the reach of the film industry. It influences the minds of people. We were discussing avenues how the police could use their creative services." said Satyapal Singh, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.
The meeting was attended by actor Ajay Devgn, writers Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, Director Madhur Bhandarkar and producer Ekta Kapoor.
The Mumbai Police called it an image building exercise. They roped in celebrities to discuss the portrayal of women in films and create awareness about crimes against women.
"At today's meet between Bollywood personalities and police the main issue was safety and security of Mumbai and how we can work together. It was a positive and an interactive approach. Extortion calls to Bollywood were not discussed," said Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Over the past few days, there have been a series of reports on threats to film personalities - Sonu Nigaam, Karan Johar and Ram Gopal Varma to name a few.
Salim Khan, whose son actor Salman Khan is an accused in a hit-and-run case by the Mumbai Police was sitting right next to the Police Commissioner at the post event press conference was all praise for the men in khaki.
"I would like to tell all those who criticise the police to go and see the condition in other states. Nowhere is there so much respect for Khaki as there is in Mumbai and Maharashtra," he said.
With so many policemen and their on-screen avatars present, parallels had to be drawn. Actor Ajay Devgn said, "The best part of Singham was there was not only one Singham but towards the climax of the film you see every cop becoming a Singham and getting together. And if there was a villain in the film it was the politician and it showed the kind of pressure the police sometimes face."
