Mumbai: The Bhoiwada police on Friday arrested a senior clerk working at the Parel-based Tata Memorial Hospital for allegedly maintaining physical relations with a divorcee working in the same hospital for the past three years on the pretext of marrying her.

"Parel resident Sanjay Shankar Sawant, 40, was booked under sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC and was remanded in police custody till November 22 by the local court," said police inspector SG Kale of Bhoiwada police station, adding that Sawant has been working at the hospital for the past 16 years.

During the inquiry, it was revealed that Sawant, who was already married and had an 11-year-old daughter, showed the victim a bogus divorce notice served to his wife to gain her confidence.

The victim, who has been working in the stores department of the hospital for the past decade, also gave him over Rs1 lakh to buy a new house after their marriage, said Kale.

The incident came to light last week, when the 34-year-old victim Anita Malekar (name changed to protect identity), a divorcee with a 11-year-old daughter, lodged a complaint. Malekar had divorced her husband in 2006 and now stays with her school-going daughter at Parel. Working at the same hospital, she and Sawant became close friends, and their friendship later turned into love.

She added that Sawant wanted to marry her, but she told him to divorce his wife first. He also met her parents and close relatives regarding the issue. To gain her confidence, he showed her a bogus divorce notice, presumably served to his wife.
