Mumbai:
The Mumbai Sessions Court today sentenced 24-year-old Nagendra Paswan to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a 19-year-old co-worker in 2010.
Back then, Paswan, had come to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh in search of work. He started working in a garment factory as helper. Police say, that is where he met the victim, who was already working there as a labourer.
According to the case presented in court, Paswan started approaching and stalking her and she rejected his advances but in July that year, he called the victim to the factory which was also his make shift accommodation. They had an argument and Paswan tried to sexually assault her and in a fit of rage strangled her with her dupatta thus killing her on the spot.
Paswan then locked the room and threw the original keys in the backyard and then fled to his home town.
The case was registered by the victim's family after she didn't return home that day.
A few days later, when one of the co-workers managed to open the room with the help of a duplicate key, he found the victim's body.
The police initially lodged a murder case, but after receiving the DNA report, charges of rape were invoked.
Paswan was arrested on the basis of the calls he made after which he was traced to Lucknow and then brought to Mumbai.
The Prosecution examined 17 witnesses including the co-workers of the factory and forensic experts.
