Mumbai: In the first eight months of this year, eight gang-rapes have been reported in Mumbai, often considered one of the safest cities in the country for women.
Two of the gang-rapes took place at the deserted Shakti Mills in the heart of the city.
On August 22, a 22-year-old photographer was with a male colleague shooting the defunct textile mill when a gang of five men raped her after tying up her companion. All suspects have been arrested and are being tried at a fast-track court in the city.
The assault had grim echoes of December's fatal gang-rape of a student on a moving bus in Delhi, which enraged and shook India. After huge street protests, tougher new laws were introduced to punish sexual violence against women.
Ten days after the photo-journalist's rape at Shakti Mills, another woman reported that she had been violated by five men at the same location. The police say three men are involved in both cases.
Anil Galgali, a social worker, used the Right to Information (RTI) to access police data - he was told 229 rape cases and eight gang-rapes were reported in Mumbai till August.
In 2012, a total of 223 rape and eight gang-rape cases were reported.
