Mumbai:
The Fire Brigade in Mumbai has for the first time appointed two women who will become firefighters.
The two firewomen selected for the job are Swati Satpute from Dombivali and Sheetal Salve from Dharavi who were selected from the 14 applicants who had applied for the job.
"The final induction of the two women candidates selected will be based on the medical clearance and police report. They passed the initial test of physical fitness that includes 800 meters of running, climbing, push-ups and long jump," Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said.
The candidates will be given six-month training which will enable them to start off from the control post vans at the site of a fire and then go on to actual fire fighting, Mhaiskar said.
At present, Chennai and Hyderabad fire brigades have women firefighters.
"We are in the process of inviting women candidates to join fire brigade. Two firewomen have been selected. They will be assigned rescue operations involving women," an official said.
During rescue operations it was observed that while men were carried off easily, there was awkwardness while dealing with women. That is why it was decided that women must be admitted to the force, the official added.
