Mumbai:
Ten kilograms of gold ornaments and cash collectively valued at Rs 2.41 crore were allegedly stolen from a jewellery shop by a newly appointed servant in suburban Jogeshwari, police said in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Identified as Kamlesh Choudhuary, the accused who is believed to hail from Rajasthan, was hired by Ambika Jewellers by its owner Lalchand Jain, about 10 days ago, the police said.
Allegedly, Kamlesh decamped with 10 kg of gold ornaments valued at Rs 2.40 crore and Rs 1.25 lakh in cash on Monday, the police said.
According to the police, Kamlesh went to Jain's house, which is not far from his shop which remains closed every Monday.
"He asked for the shop keys from Jain's wife saying that their son had asked for it. After she handed over the keys, he went to the shop, opened it and stole all valuables and cash from the safe and cupboard, before fleeing the spot," Jogeshwari police station's senior inspector Vitthal Damgude said.
Kamlesh was appointed through a reference given by one of his friends, Jain told investigators, the police said.
Jain had sought Kamlesh's documents but he delayed giving it to him, citing various reasons, the police said, adding that teams have been formed to trace the accused.
"We have a photograph of the accused. Though it is not very clear, we are making our best effort to track him down," the officer said.
