Mumbai: A Mumbai man's plot to kill his wife could have come straight out of a Hollywood thriller. But while the plan worked, unlike the silver screen, he got caught.
Jitin Dedhia had planned a fake robbery attempt, during which, his wife was meant to be killed. The man was in love with a relative, Rupal Chheda, but his wife Beena had refused to divorce him, the police said.
In the end, he hired two men -- Nazim and Hasruddin Malik -- to murder Beena.
On October 27, 2009, the men, pretending to be snatchers came on a bike and accosted Beena, who was out for a morning walk with her husband. Beena got stabbed, and Jitin Dedhia was injured to keep up appearances, the police said.
But after investigation, the Mumbai police found that Jitin Dedhia himself had planned the attack. The police said he had paid the men Rs 1 lakh.
On Wednesday, a Mumbai court convicted Jitin Dedhia and the two attackers. The verdict came after the court examined 35 witnesses and overturned a lower court order that found them not guilty.
The sentence will be pronounced on August 1.
