Mumbai:
A man's demand for a salary hike led to a close brush with death for his brother on Wednesday night, when his employer shot at the latter after thrashing him.
The Mumbai police arrested the cable operator and detained two others for firing at a Youth Congress leader, Kishore Gaikwad, after beating up his brother, Babu, employed with him.
Babu Gaikwad, working for the last five years for Rajesh Borkar, had been asking for a raise in his salary.
Since Borkar didn't pay his demands any heed, he stopped going to work four days back, leading the operator to thrash him and shoot at his brother, Kishore, a Youth Congress leader from Mulund.
MiD DAY spoke to Babu at Mulund police station, who witnessed the shooting of his brother.
"Since Borkar denied my continual requests for a salary hike, I stopped going to work. Last afternoon, he came to my place and took me to his office, where he, along with his brothers and bodyguards, whipped me with belts and rods. They also tried bribing me with Rs 1,000, so that I don't complain to the police."
He continued, "Later in the evening, Kishore came to know about the incident. So along with my sister Annapurna, we went to Borkar's office. When he saw us, he thought we would attack him. So he immediately removed his licensed revolver, shot two bullets in the air and one at Kishore."
Kishore, who caught the bullet in his chest, was rushed to Sion Hospital, where he is currently recuperating. Doctors say he is out of danger.
Babu added, "We did not go to hit him. But he shot at my brother in front of me."
Police arrested Borkar soon after and detained two of his companions later in the evening. They have all been booked for assault, attempt to murder, abusing, and violation of the Arms Act.
Locals said that Borkar, a builder who is into cable TV business, used to threaten people with his licenced revolver at the slightest provocation.
Police Inspector Milind Jadhav said, "We have arrested Rajesh Borkar and have filed a case against him and two others. Babu had been working with Borkar for long and they had a tiff over his salary hike. They assaulted Babu and shot at Kishore."
