Mumbai: Mentally ill mother kills 3-year-old son

Mumbai: In a brutal incident, a mentally ill woman killed her three-year-old son before attempting suicide at sector-4 in Ghansoli, police said. The accused lady has been identified as Varsha Shashikant Ghodke (23).

The incident happened on Monday after Saurabh, her three-year-old son returned from school. According to police, Ghodke was mentally-ill. "She killed her son by slitting his throat in the bathroom and later on tried to kill herself by slashing wrists. The incident might have taken place due to her illness," ACP (Vashi Division) Mujeeb Shaikh said.

The incident came to light when Ghodke's mother who stays above their house came home to meet Saurabh. "When the incident happened, my husband was sleeping in the hall but it seems that she quietly took her son to the bathroom and covered his mouth before killing him. She had a history of psychological problem," Ghodke's mother said, adding, "Her husband is a gem of a person. We have not even informed him yet. Few months back she had started working as a sales girl in a private firm. She had left the house and was staying with someone else for around three months. After that when she came back, we all accepted her and forgave her for her mistakes but later we understood that she had turned mentally-ill. She was undergoing treatment since then."

Ghodke's husband Shashikant, is working as a driver with BEST. "They both got married in the year 2006. It is a custom in our family that the girls get married to their maternal uncle, and hence she was married to Shashikant. Our father was a mathadi worker and we all stayed together in the same building," Ghodke's brother, Ishwar Birajdar said. He added, "She was mentally-ill but we did not expect that she would take such an extreme step. We all were very fond of Saurabh but now he is gone. We don't care what happens to her."

Ghodke and Birajdar family stayed together at Swami Samarth society in sector 4 at Ghansoli. Ghodke has been admitted to Vashi's NMMC Hospital and is said to be out of danger. A case against Ghodke has been registered with Koparkhairane Police under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC. The further investigations are done under the guidance of Sr PI Arun Walture from Koparkhairane Police Station.
