Mumbai: The Mumbai Police today opened doors to its new six-storey wing at its headquarters near the Crawford Market in south Mumbai.
The much-delayed state-of-the-art building will house a command and control centre that will receive live feeds from CCTV cameras across the city.
The construction work of the new building began in 2011 and was completed last week.
The Mumbai Police has also established its presence online with Twitter handles for the city's police force and the Commissioner of Police at @MumbaiPolice and @CPMumbaiPolice.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the building. Among the first to welcome the Mumbai Police and Mumbai Police Commissioner on Twitter was Delhi Police Commissioner, BS Bassi. The new building will also bring all the wings of the Mumbai Police in one place.
The Crime Intelligence Unit, Cyber Crime Cell, Missing Persons Bureau, Special Task Force, Property Cell, Economic Offences Wing among others will function from under one roof.
It will also have a citizen's facilitation centre at the ground floor that will serve citizens under a single window system.
Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmad Javed said, "We had planned it earlier but finally today the Police Housing Corporation handed it over to us. Also, due to increased employment in the police department the problem of space constraint has been solved due to this. This facility will increase our efficiency."
