Mumbai:
The JJ Marg police have identified the person who helped Mehendi Kasim Sheikh in procuring fake documents. Sheikh, a self-proclaimed black magician who allegedly raped six sisters and their domestic help over a period of time, had a fake PAN card, an election card and photocopies of a passport. The police seized all these fake documents.
According to sources, Sheikh told the police that he was helped by a man named Nasruddin. After recovering the fake cards, the police slapped forgery charges on Sheikh. "He said Nasruddin, a Pydhonie resident, had helped him in procuring these documents," said a police officer.
However, the officer believes that tracing Nasruddin will be a difficult task as the documents were prepared in 1998. "It won't be easy to trace Nasruddin as touts keep changing their locations and operate on different names. We are trying to get more information from the Dongri and Pydhonie areas about him," the officer said.
The police are yet to recover Rs22 lakh which Sheikh had fleeced from the families of the victims in the past few years. "We think Sheikh had either invested the money or sent it to his wife in West Bengal. A police team has been dispatched to West Bengal on Tuesday. They would record the statement of his wife and carry out a search at his residence there," added the officer.
Sheikh was produced before a local court on Tuesday and his police custody was extended till December 10.
Shaikh who has graduated in Urdu from Uttar Pradesh had come to the city in 1999. He came in contact with the family in 2002 when he was hired to teach Urdu to the six young girls. He taught them for six months before the male members of the family objected to his presence and stopped the tuition.
However, Shaikh kept in touch with the female members of the household and gained their confidence over a period of time.
Shaikh had apparently told the women in 2006 that their daughters would deliver mentally deformed children if they were not treated. He persuaded them into renting a place where they could be treated. Taken in by his words, they rented four different places in the South Mumbai.
