Senior Police Inspector Vilas Joshi, who was shot dead allegedly by his deputy at a suburban police station, was today cremated with full state honours in south Mumbai.
Mr Joshi (54), who hailed from Ratnagiri district, was the senior police inspector of Vakola Police station where the firing took place.
He is survived by his father, wife and twin daughters who are class X students.
Several top officers including state DGP Sanjeev Dayal, city police commissioner Rakesh Maria, all joint commissioners of Mumbai police attended the funeral at Chandanwadi crematorium.
The victim's younger brother Ganesh Joshi, who is an official at Panvel RTO performed the last rites.
"Generosity and helpfulness was in his (Joshi's) DNA, whenever and where ever he got a chance to help someone... he went ahead to do this," said Sudhir Sohni, one of his classmates.
Responding to a question whether Mr Joshi's family would be getting some aid, Mumbai police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni said, "Yes. We have set procedure for it which will be followed."
Mr Joshi died at a private hospital late last night after Assistant Sub-Inspector Dilip Shirke (55) allegedly shot him and police wireless operator Balasaheb Ahir before shooting himself dead inside the Vakola police station in suburban Santacruz yesterday.
Taking a serious note of the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
Earlier, Mr Maria had also ordered an inquiry into the incident by a team of crime branch unit.
