Mumbai:
Mumbai police are yet to arrest Varsha Ghodke, who allegedly killed her three-year-old son before attempting suicide, as she is still undergoing treatment at Sion hospital.
The accused, a resident of sector-4 in Ghansoli, killed her son Saurabh after he came back from school on December 6. She later tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrists.
According to the police, "Ghodke was initially admitted at Vashi's NMMC hospital. She was later taken to King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) and then shifted to Sion Hospital. Our men have been deployed at the hospital there. She will be arrested as soon as she is discharged from the hospital," Sr PI Arun Walture from Koparkhairane Police Station said.
Ghodke took her son to the bathroom and slit his throat with a knife before slashing her own wrist.
According to the police, Ghodke seems to be mentally-ill. The incident came to light when Ghodke's mother who stays in the same building came to meet Saurabh only to find him lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom.
Ghodke's husband Shashikant works as a driver with BEST. She was married to her maternal uncle, as part of a custom followed in their family, in the year 2006.
Ghodke's parents and siblings claimed that she was under-going treatment since few months for her mental-illness.
"As of now she is in the general ward at Sion Hospital undergoing treatment only for the injuries sustained on her wrists. Currently, she is not undergoing any treatment for psychological disorder. However, if the doctors certify that she is mentally-ill then she will be treated for the same," the official added.
