Mumbai: An NRI businessman, who was visiting Mumbai, ended up in hospital in a critical condition after he was attacked in a case of road rage in the city's Bandra-Kurla Complex.
Sanjay Jaiswal, who was on holiday in India, was out walking with a relative when he saw the driver of a car hitting another with a baseball bat.
Mr Jaiswal tried to intervene. The man wielding the bat, identified as Indrajit Sawant, then hit the NRI on his head, resulting in a fracture in his skull. He is now under observation for 48 hours in the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital.
Mr Sawant allegedly pulled out his baseball bat after his car, a Chevrolet Optra, collided with another vehicle, driven by an executive named Rishi Gandhi. Mr Sawant then allegedly began hitting him when the NRI tried to stop the fight and asked Mr Sawant to pay for damages to the car.
Worse, no one came to the businessman's rescue even as the horror unfolded - a grim reminder of the city's apathy that has been exposed several times in the recent past.
"More than me I feel sorry for Jaiswal...No body helped us...he was lying in a pool of blood," said Mr Gandhi.
It was only much later that the crowd gathered there caught hold of the accused.
According to the police, Mr Sawant, who is a former vice-president of an engineering company, was drunk at the time of the accident. He has been arrested for attempt to murder and has been remanded to police custody till June 12.
