50-lakh Jewellery Missing From Film-Maker Kiran Rao's Home: Report

Mumbai: The Khar police are investigating a complaint that jewellery worth over Rs 53 lakh is missing from filmmaker Kiran Rao's home in Bandra.

Based on a complaint filed by Rao's relative, the police have registered a first information report under Section 453 (theft in dwelling house, etc) of the Indian Penal Code.

Rao is married to actor Aamir Khan, and the two live in an apartment on Carter Road.

According to the complaint, Rao discovered sometime last week that a ring and a diamond necklace were missing from her bedroom.

Following this, her relative filed the complaint at the Khar police station, under whose jurisdiction the family home falls.

mid-day could not reach the complainant. When we called Rao, she was unavailable for comment. Khar police station officials refused to comment. A senior officer involved in the probe confirmed the developments, on the condition that he will not be named.

Maids under suspicion

According to sources, the police consider the domestic help as prime suspects and have been questioning the three of them over the last five days. Each day, the three are being picked up in the morning and let off only late in the evening after a full day of grilling.

The sources added that the police officers, while questioning the suspects, are not mentioning what exactly the missing jewellery items are, keeping their questions vague.

Day-long grilling

Those being questioned have been identified as: the household cook Farzana, Rao's assistant Suzanna, and domestic help Jhumki, according to sources. They are being questioned at Khar police station, where, sources said, they are made to sit from morning till evening.

The police have also visited the homes of the three in their quest to find the missing necklace and ring but have not come up with solid leads so far.
