Mumbai:
The Malabar Hill police have arrested a 22-year-old former driver of a millionaire businessman for allegedly stealing the latter's debit card and decamping with lakhs of rupees. The victim, suffering from short term memory loss, had written his PIN on the back of the card, which was stolen by the suspect to withdraw money.
"We have recovered the stolen debit card from Gauda. It has been established that he had withdrawn Rs4 lakh using this card," said an officer. The police said, the victim is a resident of Malabar Hill and stays with his daughter and younger son Sandeep Chaudhary, 53, while his eldest son Sanjeev, 55, lives in London. Nitesh Gauda used to work for Sanjeev as his driver.
"Once, when Sandeep was on his way to the airport, Gauda was driving recklessly and an accident took place. He was then sacked," the officer said.
"The victim had asked his daughter to withdraw some money. She could not find the debit card. The family suspected Gauda, as the victim had written his PIN behind the card and Gauda knew where the card was kept in the house. The family then lodged a complaint," the officer said. Gauda was arrested on Friday and produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till December 15.
