Mumbai:
The principal of St Xavier's School in Mumbai's Andheri (East) has been arrested for allegedly molesting a six-year-old student.
The principal, Rozario Alphonso, has been sent to police custody till Tuesday. Police are also probing allegations that the principal molested another student as well.
The arrest came after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered on Tuesday under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012. Police says the alleged molestation took place on August 31.
"MIDC police station has arrested the accused and we have his custody. Investigations are on in the case. We are investigating if there have been any complaints before," Dilip Rupwate, Assistant Commissioner of Police told reporters.
As news of the arrest spread, protests broke out with Congress corporator Sheetal Mhatre vandalising the school along with her supporters this morning. Other political parties too protested against the incident. A case is being registered against the corporator as well for vandalism.
The St Xavier's School is not a Jesuit Institution though it shares its name with the popular Jesuit school in Dhobi Talao.
