Mumbai subways in pathetic condition, say corporators

Mumbai: The standing committee members during its meeting held on Wednesday complained about the poor condition of subways in the city. The elected representatives said that almost all the city subways don't have light, which leads to driving problem during the night time. Besides, with time the traffic in city is growing and so is the number of vehicles using subways.

"The subway at Vashi village is in poor condition, it has numerous leakages and lights are also not installed which causes huge problem for the motorist even during day time. Besides, even during summer the water gets clogged in the underpass. Subways in Rabale and Koparkhairane too are facing the same problem, therefore the corporation should take immediate steps to repair them," said Congress corporator Dashrath Bhagat.

Vashi corporator, Ramesh Shinde demanded a subway in sector-10. "There is huge traffic near Shabri Hotel and Sanjog Hotel in Vashi therefore pedestrians have tough time moving on this road. Commuting will be convenient if the corporation constructs subway here," said Shinde.

At the same time, Koparkhairane corporator, Vijayanad Mane complained that the Koparkhairane subway connecting Thane-Belapur highway, has water clogged throughout the year.

"Water is always clogged in this subway which causes huge trouble to the commuters, people avoid taking the subway specially in nights as there are no lights, it leads to huge traffic on the main roads. If the subways are well constructed and have a good lighting people will prefer using them and the traffic on roads will also reduce making inter-city commuting more hassle free," added Mane.

To this Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation official, Mohan Dagaonkar replied, "We are doing the survey of all the subways in the city and they will be renovated at the earliest."
