Mumbai:
To address overcrowding, the Arthur Road Jail has decided to construct a new ground-plus-one barrack in which 200 inmates can be lodged.
"Construction has started. It will take almost one-and-a-half-years to complete the structure," said jailer R Dhamne.
Against a capacity of 1,074 prisoners, the jail has been overcrowded with more than 3,000 inmates over the past few years. These include the Pakistani terrorist of the 26/11 attacks, Mohammed Kasab, and members of gangs run by Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Arun Gawli and Chhota Shakil.
"We shifted some of the inmates to Taloja jail and decided to construct a new barrack. We could not make a huge barrack due to lack of space. So we decided to make a ground-plus-one structure," said a jail authority, requesting anonymity.
"Digging work started a month back. The new barrack will have the same facilities as the others," said Dhamne. Interestingly, on digging to a depth of 8-9 feet, construction workers found a human skull and parts of the skeleton. It is believed that the skeleton may be from the British period.
