Congress leader Priya Dutt at the event in Mumbai
Mumbai:
On World Cerebral Palsy Day on October 1, Able Disabled All People Together (ADAPT), a non-profit organization, celebrated the achievements of people diagnosed with cerebral palsy despite their physical challenges.
At a function organized in Bandra, Mumbai, awards were given out in the field of academics, corporate employment, social activism, entrepreneurship and arts and humanities.
"The Centre for Disease Control estimates of incidence of cerebral palsy globally show that there is a child with cerebral palsy born every hour in India. Not much had happened in this area and there is now a renewed focus on cerebral palsy," said Sathi Alur, a parent, told NDTV.
It is estimated that cerebral palsy affects 17 million people in the world.
"To begin with first there had to be inclusion at the disability level itself where severe disabilities like cerebral palsy are treated equal with the other disabilities," said Alok Sikka, who won an award. "Secondly there has to be inclusion at the level of society where people with disabilities as a whole get to integrate with the society at every level including education, employment and in the community."
Congress leader and former MP Priya Dutt attended the event and gave away prizes.
"It's the little things that go on and make a difference. Sometimes people do not want to cooperate and that causes a huge problem," Ms Dutt told NDTV.
