Mumbai: You can stroll down Mumbai's famous Marine Drive and Chowpatty beach, and use that time to let the surroundings sink in, because selfies are now forbidden there.
The Mumbai Police has identified 15 dangerous selfie spots across the city after a man drowned trying to save a girl who fell into the sea while taking a photo of herself and her friends.
Among the sites shortlisted as risky: the beachfronts at Dadar and Juhu, the Bandra Bandstand and forts at Worli and Bandra.
"We will write to the civic body to put up signboards at tourists spots along the coast warning tourists and others that they should not take selfies as it is dangerous," Dhananjay Kulkarni, the spokesperson of the Mumbai Police explained.
However, violators - those who simply can't resist selfies - will not be fined. "We will make people aware (of the guidelines) through our Twitter account and our website," he added.
A teenager and her two friends fell off rocks into the Arabian Sea near Bandra Bandstand in the north of the city while clicking selfies on Saturday.
A passerby, 37-year-old Ramesh Walanju, jumped in and helped save the two friends, but was washed away by the choppy waters and his body was found floating in a nearby creek on Monday. The girl is still missing.
Police officers patrolling the selected areas have been briefed to warn people against taking selfies, police officers said.
