Mumbai:
Launching a video series aimed at making the Mumbai residents more alert in public spaces, a senior Mumbai Police official today lamented the lack of appreciation for the hard work he claimed they did to keep the city safe.
Satyapal Singh, Mumbai Commissioner of Police, said, "Police are like goal-keepers of the city. Nobody notices how many rapes we prevent, how many thefts we stop or how many attacks we foil. Everyone's attention is on what slips through."
The video-series, 'Mumbai Ke Liye Ek Minute' (A Minute for Mumbai), asks people to spare a minute to look for suspicious objects, people or vehicles and report them to the police. The police say that this will help the force to prevent terror attacks in the city.
Citing the example of the German Bakery Blast in Pune in 2010, Mr Singh said, "The bomb was lying there for 86 minutes. Even when a worker alerted the manager, the bag lay there for a good 20 minutes. This after the police had warned them of an impending threat."
Also present at the event was Maharashtra's Home Minister RR Patil who was asked about the delay in procuring CCTV cameras promised by the government after the 26/11 attacks. "A committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been set up to look into this matter. The committee will make a final decision on this soon," he said.
