Mumbai: An Indian-origin American toddler, kidnapped for ransom two days ago, was recovered on Saturday from Manmad and a house-maid and her husband were arrested, the police said.
One-and-a-half-year-old Vihaan was rescued at 12.30 am at the Manmad railway station (in Nashik district) and two abductors, Sangeeta Singh (32) and her husband Hari Singh (40), were arrested, said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy.
The couple had planned to take the boy to Delhi and make a ransom call for Rs five lakh from there.
According to the police, Vihaan's grandfather, Yatin, had gone to the USA a fortnight ago to meet his daughter Meenati who works as a project manager there.
While returning, Yatin brought his grandson along. On Thursday afternoon, Sangeeta, who works as maid at Yatin's house at Malabar hill, left home with the boy in her arms, saying she was taking the toddler for an outing.
However, she did not return, following which panicked family members started searching for Vihaan and her. Subsequently, a police complaint was lodged.
"The family members did not have Sangeeta's photo but fortunately her image was captured in CCTVs at the building while she was taking the boy away," Roy said.
