A one-day-old baby boy was stolen on Wednesday evening from B J Wadia Hospital in Central Mumbai.
Jasmine Naik, was admitted to the hospital on Monday. She delivered a baby boy next evening. On Wednesday, Mrs Naik stepped outside her ward to take a small walk when the baby disappeared.
Speaking to NDTV Jasmine said, "As I underwent a C-section the nurse told me to take a walk. I was in no position to do so but did it with the help of my mother. When I returned I saw my baby was missing. We searched for the baby in the ward. Security guards were asked to check but it yielded no result. A person told us that he saw a woman holding the child and was running away.
"This hospital has poor security arrangements. There are no CCTV cameras, no security guard outside the ward. The sisters and ward boys have a callous attitude", adds the inconsolable mother.
"This is the worst hospital and I can never forgive myself. It was a wrong decision to bring my wife here for the delivery", said Devdas Naik, father of the baby.
The police have released a sketch based on the description of an eyewitness present at the scene. According to him, the woman was around 25 years old, has a dark complexion and was wearing an orange dotted saree.
A case of kidnapping has been registered against an unknown woman and a sketch has been released. "We are trying to locate the kidnapper and will try our best to unite the child with the parents," said V Patil , senior inspector Bhoiwada police station where the case has been registered.
MJ Jassawalla, medical director of the hospital has told NDTV that a proposal to install CCTV cameras was mooted a month ago and the trust was in the process to procure them. He also said they have 30 security guards manning the hospital.
"We have started an inquiry and whoever was responsible for the incident, action would be taken against them," said Mr Jassawala.
BJ Wadia Hospital is run by the Wadia trust and receives partial funding from the city's civic corporation.
