Mumbai: One person died and eight others were injured after a portion of the Eastern Expressway flyover collapsed in Shanti Nagar in Mumbai's Wadala area on Thursday night. A case of negligence has been registered against the company constructing the flyover.
The mishap happened at around 10.45 pm when a portion of the flyover fell on the vehicles underneath, trapping nine people under the debris. The eight people who were injured in the collapse were rushed to nearby hospitals. They are all said to be in critical condition.
A truck, parked underneath the flyover, was completely smashed.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority or MMRDA has launched a probe to investigate the incident. Officials say prima facie it seems a mechanical failure in the segment launcher caused the mishap.
Initial reports had suggested that a portion of the monorail section, which is next to the flyover, had collapsed. However, officials of the MMRDA, the city's planning body, later clarified that it was actually a part of Eastern Expressway flyover, connecting south and Navi Mumbai.
"Action against the contractor will be swift and harsh if there is any lacunae," said MMRDA Chairman Rahul Asthana.
