Mumbai: The passenger whose behavior on an Indigo plane from Dubai to Kozhikode forced it to make an emergency landing this morning at Mumbai, is reportedly "mentally disturbed", said senior police sources.

The man, identified as Ismail, was travelling with his brother from Dubai to Kerala, when he started attacking other passengers.  He also refused to remain in his seat.

Officials say Ismail, 24, shouted that he was worried about the plane being hijacked by ISIS operatives.  Unnamed officials quoted by news agency PTI said he did not shout pro-ISIS slogans, as accounted in some reports.

The plane landed in Mumbai after the pilot informed the Air Traffic Control and the ground security staff.

The Central Industrial Security Forces, which is in charge of airport security across the country, took away the passenger for questioning, the airline said.

The Mumbai police have said an inquiry is on. So far they believe the individual had no links with ISIS.
