Passengers Evacuated Using Slides After Smoke on IndiGo Plane

The IndiGo flight from which smoke was reported while landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Wednesday

New Delhi: Nearly 150 people on board an IndiGo flight from Mumbai were evacuated using emergency slides after the plane landed in Delhi this afternoon and the pilot was alerted to plumes of smoke.

A statement from the airline said, "As soon as the Captain got the information about the dense smoke from the ATC tower, he immediately ordered the crew to evacuate all passengers in the interest of passengers and crew safety. The evacuation was done on taxi way after safely landing the aircraft." (Read Full Statement Here)

Passengers were evacuated within 75 seconds using chutes, the airline said, adding that a few passengers received minor injuries during evacuation and have been sent home after appropriate medical care.

Airport sources told NDTV that a fire engine passing near the plane notice "heavy smoke" towards "the left hand side undercarriage of the A-320 aircraft." The information was relayed to the Air Traffic Control which alerted the pilot to the smoke.
