Mumbai:
A sub-inspector attached to the Mumbai Police Headquarters has accused an inspector from the Mankhurd police of cheating more than 100 policemen and civilians on the pretext of doubling their money in two years.
Sub-Inspector Janardan Tarde has complained to Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal against Inspector Bhimashankar Dhole of the Mankhurd police.
According to the complaint, in 2008, Tarde and Dhole were posted in the Kalachowkie police station.
During that time, Dhole formed a company called Easy Deals, which had its head office in Pune and a branch office at Chatai Chawl, Kalachowkie.
Dhole told his colleagues in the department and some civilians that if they invest Rs 6,000 or Rs 10,000 in his company, he would return double the amount in monthly installments in two years.
He promised that he would send cheques of the installments to the investors' homes every month and sweetened the deal by offering a bag, material for a safari suit and a towel on signing up.
Dhole's standing as a police officer inspired confidence and more than 100 civilians and policemen, including Tarde, signed up.
No cheques made it to the investors, however, and Dhole suddenly shut the company. He was transferred to the Mankhurd police station soon after.
Tarde said that since Dhole is a police officer, no one dared to demand the money back.
"Dhole has earned more than Rs 20 lakh through the scheme. No one dared to register a complaint against him. I have complained to our superiors and sought action," he said.
According to sources, Dhole has bought a godown worth Rs 60 lakh in Bhiwandi.
