Thane: A lady Police Constable was allegedly physically assautled and abused on Thursday by a car driver when she asked him to stop talking on his cellphone while driving, an official said.
The 29-year-old Constable was allegedly assaulted by the man at a busy junction in Naupada at around 11 am and the attack left her bleeding by nose, said Police PRO Gajanan Kabdule tonight.
The attacker, Shashikant Kalgude, who was driving an SUV, has been arrested, he said.
The policewoman spotted the 44-year-old talking on phone while driving near a flyover, a short distance from Traffic Police HQ. She signalled him to stop. However, the SUV driver tried to speed run away and the Constable stood before his vehicle and prevented its further movement, he said.
When the policewoman asked for driving licence and relevant documents, the accused started abusing her and then slapped and punched her on nose, Kabdule said.
A passer-by intervened and rescued the Constable but he was also roughed up by Shashikant, said to be an activist of a political party.
The SUV driver has been booked under IPC Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his/her duty) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).
