New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the situation arising due to incessant rains in Mumbai and adjoining areas and promised all possible support from the government. "Centre assures all possible support to the government of Maharashtra in mitigating the situation due to heavy rains in parts of the state," the prime minister tweeted this evening.
PM Modi also urged the people of Mumbai and surrounding areas to stay safe and take all essential precautions in the wake of the heavy rains.
Normal life has been paralysed in Mumbai and adjoining areas since last night, with road, rail and air services being badly affected due to heavy showers. Weathermen have predicted this to be the worst rain since July 2005, when floods killed more than 500 people in Mumbai.
Citizens were advised to stay in their homes and venture out only in the case of emergencies.
Road traffic was badly hit, with water logging causing roads to be blocked for long periods of time. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link was closed for a period of time to help clear traffic, but it was opened later in the evening.
Some subways were also closed due to water logging.
The local trains, Mumbai's lifeline when it comes to transportation, faced major delays. Flights too were delayed by at least half an hour.
Devendra Fadnavis was at the State Disaster Management Control to get a briefing on the situation in Mumbai.
Indian Metereological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall, with the Maharashtra government asking schools and colleges to stay shut tomorrow.
