In yet another case of road rage, a 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting 52-year-old on-duty head constable AM Palve from Sion police station. The incident took place on Tuesday morning at Sion railway station near Ramdev Hotel.
The accused, Ravindra Phoolchand Gupta, is a teacher by profession, and runs private tuition classes in Sion. He was booked by the Sion police for slapping the constable, manhandling and verbally abusing him.
Around 8.30 am, Mr Palve was on duty and was performing the Sion police's Chain Snatching Prevention Operation near Ramdev Hotel when Gupta entered a lane on his bike from the wrong side. Mr Palve saw him, stopped him and asked for his licence.
At this, Mr Gupta made an attempt to speed away, but Mr Palve caught him and took away his bike keys. Annoyed, the teacher abused the constable and caught his collar, then hit him across the face.
"The accused was arrested immediately under sections 353 (obstructing government servant from performing his duties), 332 (assaulting a public servant on duty), 188 (non-compliance with public official's orders), 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as sections 184 and 177 of The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. He will be produced in the Kurla Court on Wednesday," said PSI J M Jadhav, investigating officer.
mid-day learnt that due to a staff crunch in Sion police station, only one policeman had been deployed at a particular spot for the Chain Snatching Prevention Operation, and this resulted in the staff facing many problems.
