Mumbai: For the second time in four days, Mumbaikars had to bear another power outage, if only for a smaller time period. For almost an hour, the island city was without power, after the Dharavi and Vikhroli receiving stations of Tata Power, licensed to supply power to the city, tripped following an overload.
The company claimed that the Dharavi and Vikhroli receiving stations, along with parts of Mahalaxmi and Backbay receiving stations, shut down at 5.10 pm due to overload, and complete supply was resumed by 6.01pm.
The shutdown affected seven BEST sub-stations, breaking down supply in the island city. It extended to the suburbs as it also hit the Reliance Energy network in Chembur, Ghatkopar, Bandra and Santa Cruz.
A Tata Power spokesperson claimed they had restored power at Mahalaxmi by 5.14pm, at Dharavi by 5.27pm, at Backbay by 5.30pm, and at Vikhroli and by 5.32pm, which was when railway feeders were also restored. Complete supply was restored by 6.01pm.
He said there was nothing more to the power failure than a system overload, but acknowledged that the Dharavi receiving station was prone to tampering by slum-dwellers around it. "We had conducted a periodic overhauling recently so that cannot be an issue," he claimed. Unlike on Friday, the fault was limited to receiving stations, and therefore did not lead to a system collapse.
A Reliance Energy spokesperson claimed that supply was normalised in 25 minutes in their areas.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, which is responsible for areas like Mulund and Bhandup, said that the fault had led to a generation loss of 400mw.
