Mumbai, Maharashtra:
A sensational murder involving high profile suspects - a dream case for any police officer. Mumbai's celebrated police chief Rakesh Maria is due for a promotion next month and many are considering the Sheena Bora case his parting shot.
After the anonymous tip-off set the Mumbai police on the trail of Sheena's mother Indrani Mukerjea, the media executive married to Star India chief Peter Mukerjea, Mr Maria put his most trusted lieutenants on the job. They include police officers who were involved in the 26/11 investigation, like Dattatray Bhargude, Dinesh Kadam and Sanjay Kadam.
Dinesh Kadam, say sources, was transferred to the police station in charge of the case just after the tip-off was received about Sheena Bora.
These men have worked with Mr Maria for years and have trained in the city's elite Crime Branch.
Mr Maria has monitored this investigation very closely and has also handled the interrogation of Indrani Mukerjea himself. He questioned Indrani the day she was arrested and he also spent seven hours grilling her on Thursday.
These officers are also known for their sharp policing skills. They also know the way Mr Maria works, having assisted him in the Crime branch and the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad.
All these men, who swear by their boss, refused to come on record on the case. It is perhaps because of this discretion, and the faith that their boss has in their ability to keep the investigation confidential, that they were enlisted in this case. A team that operates with complete trust, like clockwork, is essential to a probe like this, say officers.
Mr Maria made an exception and spoke to the press on camera after a long time. Ever since he became Commissioner of Police, he has not given a single interview. This case, however, represents a triumph for him and his men.
