Mumbai:
A three-year-old girl, Lado Gupta, was crushed to death by a car that was allegedly being driven by 19-year-old Raunak Desai. Raunak is the son of former Congress corporator Sameer Desai who is Senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat's nephew. The accident took place on Monday night.
The three-year-old victim's uncle Umesh Yadav told reporters, "We were standing on the road. A car came and hit the child. We caught the driver and handed him over to the police."
According to the police, Raunak was driving through the busy Prem Nagar area when the accident took place. Raunak was behind the wheels of his sedan and was on his way back home when the girl was crossing the road. She came under the wheels of the car and died on the spot. Raunak has been released on surety of Rs. 15,000.
Lado's inconsolable mother, Mina, said the girl had gone out to buy a snack with her elder sister. Her father who sells vegetables to make a living is shocked.
Mina told NDTV, "My older daughter wanted to eat peanuts. I told her go to the shop next door and get it. But instead of going there, she went across the road and the younger one also ran with her."
Former Congress corporator Sameer Desai defended his son, saying, "He was driving at a speed of just 15 to 20 kmph. You can see the road is a narrow one. After the incident Raunak himself picked up the little girl and took her to the hospital."
