Speeding Tata Sumo crashes into police van in Mumbai; five cops injured

Mumbai: A speeding Tata Sumo car crashed into a police van in Mumbai's Powai suburb today, leaving five policemen seriously injured.

The incident happened around 4 am while the cops were investigating another accident that happened in the same area. Assistant Police Sub Inspector Kalyan Mandalik, Constables Sridhar Sawakande, BD Dhagde, Tukaram Yadav and Sudhir Pandit were getting into the van to update the control room about mishap when the car rammed into them.

While Mr Mandalik and Mr Sawakande were given first-aid for minor injuries, others were shifted to a private hospital from the civic-run Rajawadi hospital, police said.

The driver of the car, who has been admitted the same hospital, has been identified as Sagar Gaikwad. He also sustained injuries in the accident. His blood samples had been sent to laboratory to check if he was under the influence of alcohol, police said. The 27-year-old has been booked for negligent and rash driving.
