Speeding teen biker runs over policeman

Mumbai: A speeding biker ran over an on-duty police inspector on bandobast duty and fractured his arm. The incident occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday outside Trident Hotel, Nariman Point, where 51-year-old Sunil Kadam, an inspector with the Special Branch I ('B' Branch) of the Crime Branch, was deployed outside the hotel, which houses the Mumbai Indians' team.

The incident
Vilas Sawant, senior police inspector, Marine Drive Police Station, said, "Kadam was on bandobast duty outside Trident for an IPL team. Around 10 pm, he was crossing the road, when a speeding biker knocked him from behind. Kadam was rushed to the Bombay Hospital and was admitted to the ICU at 11.15pm. We then informed Kadam's family about the incident." Sawant added that the biker, 18-year-old Jayesh Chavan, a student, has been arrested and remanded to police custody. He has been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kadam's wife Sarika said, "A couple of police officers came to our house at 11.30 pm and told me that my husband has met with an accident. I panicked and started crying. Later, I was taken to the Bombay Hospital to meet him."

Broken bones
Kadam, who is currently recuperating at the Bombay Hospital's post-operation ICU, says he has no recollection of the incident. "I don't know what happened. Something hit me from behind and I lost consciousness. The next thing I know is that I'm lying on a hospital bed with my right arm in a cast," said Kadam. "They have taken a CT scan. We are now awaiting results," said Sarika.

Complicated case
Dr M L Saraf, HOD of orthopaedics department, Bombay Hospital, said, "The patient has fractured two bones in his right arm - the radius and the ulna - and will require a plate or two to be fixed. He has also suffered from concussion, fractures on his left cheekbone and left side of the upper jaw, due to which his face is swollen. Also, the patient is a diabetic, which further complicates the case. This increases chances of infection and healing time." Dr Saraf is unsure as to when Kadam will be discharged.
