St Xavier's school trustee moves court

Mumbai: After teachers of St Xavier's High School, Nerul, went on strike last week demanding sixth pay commission salaries, the school trustee moved the Bombay High Court against the formation of the seven-member committee appointed to decide the implementation of the new pay scale for teachers.

Varsha Burli filed a civil application in court stating that she was pressurised into forming the committee. The application has been filed against deputy director of education Sunil Chavan, education officer Balasaheb Mane from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, education officer secondary Ashok Bhagwat, school principal Manisha Andhansare and a school accountant. The hearing is on December 22.

Teachers and activists claimed that the management is only trying to delay payment of salaries. "Burli had proposed the forming of this new committee. She had also agreed that there should be two trustees on the committee," said a teacher. "She came with police protection. How can she still claim she was pressurised?"

The committee was formed on December 13 to decide teachers' pay. In 2005, Chavan had ordered a freeze on the schools accounts for misappropriation of funds. On an HC order, a committee was formed to look into the matter. But, when the teachers protested against the low pay, a new civilian committee was created.
