Mumbai: A 20-year-old student allegedly tried to commit suicide by hanging himself at the terrace of a prestigious engineering institute in central Mumbai, police said.
The man identified as Mahrooq Shaikh, studying in first year engineering course at the Veermata Jeejabai Technological Institute (VJTI) at Sion, on Wednesday allegedly hanged himself from a pipe using a rope at the terrace of the institute's building, they said.
A watchman, however, spotted and rescued him, Assistant Police Commissioner Dilip Suryavanshi said.
Shaikh was admitted to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he added.
The reason for the suicide is not yet clear, police said, adding Shaikh stays in neighbouring Thane district with his aunt.
