Mumbai:
Diamonds worth Rs 2 crore were stolen from the office of a diamond merchant at Opera House over the weekend. When the trader went to his office on Monday morning, he was left aghast when the safe containing the jewels had been broken into and his valuables missing.
Officials from the D B Marg police station said that when Dhaval Shah, owner of Maa Krupa Enterprises, went to his workplace located near French Bridge at Modi Chambers, Opera House, on Monday, he found everything scattered, the door to two of his vaults cut, and valuables, including the diamonds, missing. Cops added that the accused had damaged the CCTV footage in order to evade being identified.
"Diamonds costing around Rs 2 crore are missing and Shah is still in the process of calculating what other valuables he had kept in his safe. The value of the break-in might increase," said an official from D B Marg police station.
Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police (Zone II), said, "Two vaults were broken into with a gas cutter at Shah's office, and the diamonds were stolen. We are investigating the case from all possible angles, and it seems that it might be an insider's job as there is no forced entry and the main door was opened with duplicate keys."
