A two-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a young man in suburban Vikhroli in Mumbai, police said today.
The incident took place around 11 last night and the 25-year-old accused was arrested in this connection this morning, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Pradhan said.
"The accused, who was familiar with the girl, took her to an isolated location in Parksite area in Vikhroli and sexually assaulted her there," the officer said.
As soon the case came to light in the early hours today, Parksite police arrested the accused, he said.
Another senior police officer of Parksite police station said, the child was rushed to nearby Rajawadi Hospital.
"Although her condition was initially stated to be critical, she is now stable and responding to medicine. She is undergoing treatment."
The accused has been booked under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), Pradhan said.
The victim's medical examination is underway as she has received some minor injuries in the incident, he added.
