Mumbai:
Two crashes have been reported in south Mumbai within a span of 24 hours. Both accidents involved the city's rich in speeding cars - one in a Porsche and the other in a Honda City.
In the crash involving the Honda City, the speeding car was going from Girgaum to Chawpatty when near a turning, it lost control and rammed into a stationary Toyota. The impact was such that the stationary car turned turtle and the other one a mangle of metals after it rolled over several times.
One of the occupants, 16-year-old Shifa, succumbed to her injuries at the Jaslok hospital. Her 14-year-old sister Sania is battling for her life in the ICU. Their cousin Mohsin and his friend Faizan, who was driving the car, were sent home after treatment.
The second crash involving a Porsche driven by Ankesh Shahra, son of Dinesh Shahra, the MD of Ruchi Soya, took place at Mumbai's Marine Drive. The 24-year-old was arrested after he knocked down a motorcyclist while speeding in his Porsche. Ankesh was booked for rash and negligent driving but was released on bail within hours.
The motorcyclist is now in hospital with head and leg injuries.
Ruchi Soya is among the top five FMCG companies in India, with a turnover crossing Rs. 13,000 crore.
In both cases, police say it's too early to determine whether the drivers of the cars were under the influence of alcohol.
"It's difficult to say whether the drivers were in an inebriated state. We will get to know that after the medical report is out... according to the skid marks, it seems it was a case of rash driving," said Rajendra Yadav, the investigating officer.
