Mumbai:
An American woman was attacked with a blade on board a local train in Mumbai at around 5 pm today.
24-year-old Michelle Mark, who has been working in Mumbai for the past three years and commuting by train often, had boarded an empty compartment of the local at Churchgate station, which is on the western line. The man boarded the train at Marine Lines station and carried out the attack before the train reached Charni Road.
In her statement to the police, Ms Mark said the man was in his 20s. The attack took place after she resisted the man's attempt to snatch her handbag, police said. The Police is yet to arrest the man, who they suspect to be a history sheeter.
The woman, who sustained minor injuries on her face, neck and arms, was taken to the Nair hospital in South Mumbai. She was later discharged.
What's equally shocking is that the woman was allegedly denied assistance by two personnel belonging to the Railway Protection Force posted at the Charni Road station, police inspector S Tripathi of Government Railway Police (GRP) said. A GRP constable provided her with medical assistance, he added.
